Yes, all those hue-tiful gaseous swirls and random technicolor space anomalies don’t really exist in our little section of the universe (if anywhere at all outside of nebulae), but the painstakingly accurate million-dollar-cgi renditions leave me cold.

I agree, in the same way that I think there’s a place for sound “in space” in science fiction, for the purpose of heightening drama. Just because it’s not “realistic” doesn’t mean it lacks merit. As for me, I’ll take artistic renditions over accurate ones any day.
