While not a new image, I think it’s an interesting view of the Moon.
Even if the moon really were made of green cheese it probably wouldn’t look this bizarre. Still, this mosaic of 53 images was recorded by the Jupiter-bound Galileo spacecraft as it passed near our own large natural satellite in 1992. The pictures were recorded through three spectral filters and combined in an exaggerated false-color scheme to explore the composition of the lunar surface as changes in mineral content produce subtle color differences in reflected light.

The treasure of the Moon can be appreciated when the detail is understood that the young Earth was a molten orb where all the iron sank to the centre and any water swiftly evaporated. All the iron, gold and water on the surface of our planet came from asteroids and comets crashing in and that is quite a lot of raw material for life to grow from and civilization to build on, as we look to the stars. Just as the water, iron, gold and other raw materials on Earth came from space, so it is with the Moon and Mars, waiting on the surface to expand our civilization beyond Earth and life into the cosmos.
