Celestial Glass
Posted by Danielle in Collectibles on January 19, 2010
I was reminded of these fantastic glass sculptures last week by a commenter; I saw a display of Glass Eye Studio’s Celestial Series in a rock shop coming back from the Oregon coast after Christmas. I’m a sucker for glass anyway, but these are particularly spectacular — I especially like the Moon (naturally) and Mercury.
Moon Marbles
Posted by Danielle in Children's Items, Collectibles on January 14, 2010
A friend directed me to the Moon Marble Company, where they create a terrific “Universe” set:
The Universe Mib Box holds 48 of the 5/8 inch diameter marbles. This box contains 12 styles of marbles from the Vacor Factory in Guadalahara, MX including; Stardust, Comet, Meteor, Asteroid, Milkyway, Galaxy, Jupiter, Neptune, Earth, Mars, Venus, and Sun.
Definitely worth a look-see!
Christmas Shuttle
Posted by Danielle in Collectibles on December 17, 2009

I wanted to share my favorite spacey ornament (since I just put it on the tree earlier this week, getting a late start.) I found this shuttle-riding Santa Claus at a department store some seven or eight or nine years ago, and I haven’t seen his like since. It seems I couldn’t locate his manufacturer when I posted him on a previous blog in 2002, so if I couldn’t find him then, most likely I can’t find him for you now, unfortunately. He is wearing a space suit (I’d venture to say, Apollo-era), carrying a helmet, and the shuttle is quite detailed, but red and gold instead of black.
Cool Rockets

I just can’t get enough of Aaron’s Tin Toy Arcade and their amazing selection of rockets! Here, have some rocket-spam for your Friday.
I was surprised to find the Space Patrol Coin Bank, as I’ve seen an illustration of it before — I think Discover ran it as their cover a year or two back, alluding to some sort of “Can NASA Get Their Act Together?” feature article (paraphrased.) The cover art is on a collage-covered notebook I made about a year ago, front and center.
Miniature Apollo
Posted by Danielle in Collectibles on October 6, 2009
This article on fantastically-talented miniaturist Willard Wigan is definitely worth a look, if only for the slideshow! Shown here is his miniature of Buzz Aldrin, which rests in the eye of a needle (and can fit on the head of a pin.)
Hat tip to doctorlinguist for the article!
Major Poppet Astronaut
Posted by Danielle in Collectibles on July 14, 2009
I found this little guy via moonrangerlaura on Twitter — Major Poppet Astronaut by Lisa Snellings is a poppet set on conquering the heavens. (See also her Starry Night Poppet. It matches my masthead!)

These 1950s trading cards feature great retro-future space art on the front, and… helpful safety tips on the back? (Via Retro Thing.)

Comète
Posted by Danielle in Collectibles on January 5, 2009

René Lalique introduced this glass car mascot (hood ornament) in 1925 — Comète (Comet) is a fantastic example of Art Deco aesthetics. This piece is especially rare.
The first Lalique mascot was commissioned by the Citroen company in 1925, the ‘5 horses’, for the model 5CV. There followed 27 more depicting horses’ heads, various bird and animal forms, nude figures, and even a shooting star. The mascots were made mostly in clear glass, satin finish, frosted finish, varying degrees of tinting of amethyst and pink hues, and in a variety of colours: purple, blue, amber, brown topaz, grey, and also in opalescent glass ranging from deep blue to milky white opalescence.
Astronaut Snoopy

I saw this adorable plush here. Still no sign of him on the Hallmark website, but maybe your local Hallmark store has one? (Mine sure didn’t, and not the NASA ornament, neither.)
Snoopy Salutes NASA
Posted by Danielle in Collectibles on December 19, 2008

Snoopy salutes the 50th anniversary of NASA, one of Hallmark’s 2008 Keepsake Ornaments. Must get my hands on this little guy.
