This amazing Moon light is by Japanese designer Nosigner (Eisuke Tachikawa), in response to the March 11 earthquake and tsunami. It’s a beautiful piece, I would LOVE to own one.

Conceived by Japanese designer Nosigner as a symbol of hope after the earthquake and tsunami left Japan with almost none to be had, the Moon light is an accurate rendering of our only natural satellite.

Nosigner said after the twin disasters struck, many Japanese prayed to the ‘super moon’, the biggest full moon in a cycle of 18 years. “‘The Moon’ is the light of our hope,” the designer wrote on his blog.

To mould each crevice and scar on the moon’s surface accurately, Nosigner collected 3D topographical data from the lunar orbiter Kaguya.

I saw this bowl at the MoMA Design Store in New York, and loved the texture of the piece. Made for Kartell (and available for purchase at that link.)

While I’m no fan of the Dark Side of the Force, this Death Star cookie jar does seem to be conclusive proof of the statement, “Come to the Dark Side, we have cookies.”

Lunar Eclipse rings, by JesseDanger

Last week’s Mooncrafts post was such a rollicking good time (okay, for me I mean), that I decided to post another segment! First up, a set of rings, one featuring Mokume-gane (“wood-grain metal”) in a raindrop pattern, which does well as a lunar-crater pattern too (in my opinion.)

Next up, a lunar surface pendant:

The listing itself is short on description, but it features “craters” in sterling silver, a small faceted sapphire, and a bumpy lunar “surface” of botryoidal azurite (the blue sibling of malachite.) I am giving you all these links because minerals and gemstones are important to me, and I would be remiss if I didn’t satisfy your curiosity with explanations of the terms, should you be curious. Besides, it’s not every day you run into a weird word like botryoidal!

Finally, one might call this last item a stretch, in terms of its “lunar-ness”, but it reminds me of funky sci-fi movie sets, and has the word “lunar” in the title, so I am letting it pass. That it is raku probably helped its chances, in my particular case:

In truth, I definitely think this should be an artifact from an ancient lunar civilization, or perhaps a future civilization that was somehow punted through a time distortion to land in the year 2010. Would have this in my office in a heartbeat.

Stars, by Seb Lester

I am in LOVE with this print by Seb Lester, featuring one of my favorite quotes:

“I know nothing with any certainty, but the sight of the stars makes me dream.” A quote by a man who needs no introduction, Vincent Van Gogh. The words had an immediate resonance with Seb and he knew he had to do something with them!

The lettering that Seb has developed for this piece is made up of hundreds of thousands of tiny stars, each glistening in metallic gold. To see the stars up close and from further angles please scroll through the additional images above.

The Plike paper is a very deep midnight blue, complimenting the metallic gold print perfectly.

This is a limited edition print, which is also available on royal blue. (I’m partial to the midnight version, myself.)

I have a beautiful little star ornament by Swarovski, and when I went searching to see if they’d done anything similar, I came across this lovely little comet! Seems to be out of production — at least, it’s not in the Swarovski online store — but you can get it at Crystal Classics, or by doing a little searching online.

Who knew the future had such groovy faux-wood-paneling refrigerators? (Via Vintage Ad Browser.)

A fantastic limited-edition carpet by Martin Mostboeck, celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing; sadly I can’t seem to find it on the manufacturer’s website, so I couldn’t tell you what it costs or how to get one. Sure is neat, though! (Found via Curved White.)

These moon orb lamps are lovely to look at (and at the price, ouch! Look but don’t touch.)
