Philip Hersey Photographer, Ltd

I spotted this necklace in a small mention of a new exhibit at The Field Museum in Chicago, The Nature of Diamonds. “Milky Way” and “necklace” were all I needed to read before I scurried off to the Vast and Wonderous Intarwebs to find a larger picture, and luckily, a description!

“Milky Way” Necklace: This voluminous necklace, designed by Dieter Huebner, sponsored by Brinkhaus Jewelers, is adorned with 2,000 luminous diamonds.

The “Milky Way” necklace was designed in 2000 as a celebration and ode to the millennium.

Judging from the descriptive term “voluminous”, and taking into account the 2,000 diamonds, I can safely say this bauble is out of the realm of possible purchases, for, well, ANYBODY. All the same, I’d love to see it around a neck, for scale if nothing else.

Designed with the average male in mind, the independently spinning inner ring gives him something to fiddle with.

I actually found this men’s ring while flipping through the back of an Astronomy magazine. I love meteorite jewelry, and since this has planets on it as well, I immediately pulled up the website.

This ring features a complete band of Gibeon Meteorite framed and mounted in an 18k gold band. The meteorite has been etched with nitric acid to reveal the characteristic patterns, or Widmanstatten figures, of iron meteorites, and set with 9 gemstones representing the inner planets of our Solar System. Mercury is represented by a rust colored Sapphire, Venus a golden Sapphire, Earth an irradiated blue Diamond, Mars a Ruby, Jupiter an Opal, Saturn a Cats Eye Chrysoberyl with an inlaid 24k gold ring, Uranus a green Sapphire, Neptune a blue Sapphire and Pluto a black Diamond. What really makes this ring special is that the band of meteorite spins independent of the gold ring, so when it is on, the planets rotate around the wearer’s finger.

The price isn’t for the faint of heart, but it is quite beautiful..!

Okay, so. Usually I have the whimsical thing for you on Mondays. The suggestion of space thing, the stylized thing, the imaginative thing, the inspired-by thing. Don’t say I never deliver the REAL goods: an absolutely 100% GENUINE meteorite ring.

This ring features a genuine Nantan meteorite! The Nantan meteorite fell to earth, landing in China in May of 1516 during the reign of the Chinese Emperor Zhengde. It is comprised mainly of iron. The meteorite is set on an open-design band of Argentium sterling silver.

I really like the crackle glaze on this ceramic pendant I found. It’s very unusual, and I love the detailing on the moon.

Whether you believe or are skeptical, one thing is for sure…UFO’s are cool and fun to think about! This is a great new design for all the space cadets out there!

The necklace is painted in a crackle glaze with black, yellow and white details. As the glaze cools in the kiln after the second firing process, tiny cracks appear in the glaze, creating a really great antique type finish to the glaze. There is a hint of green to this glaze that makes it a lovely compliment to most skin tones.

What appeals to me about this set of stacking rings is their rugged finish — they remind me of fusion-crusty meteorites and worn, pitted (by cosmic rays and space dust?) metal. The rose gold adds a striking note of purity amongst all that patina.

A pair of delicate stacking rings in sterling silver and red (rose) gold.

One little moonrock with an orbiting 9 carat gold satellite, both on delicate bands. The silver is oxidised, then the surface of the moonrock is polished back to bright, leaving the craters contrasting. The bands are left black and buffed to shininess, like coal.
