Space Shuttle Discovery aboard a modified Boeing 747

This flight makes a lot of stops.

NASA’s modified Boeing 747 carrying the space shuttle Discovery taxis toward the runway at Edwards Air Force Base shortly before dawn on Sept. 20, 2009, prior to taking off on their two-day ferry flight to the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Discovery landed at Edwards on Sept. 11, after a 14-day mission STS-128 to the International Space Station.

The Nose Knows

Space shuttle Discovery

I suppose this could be considered a “nostril” shot of shuttle Discovery… if it had nostrils, I mean. It will be ferried back to Florida tomorrow, after landing in California last Friday. Get a much larger version (mine is cropped square) here.

Atlantis awaits takeoff at Dryden Flight Research Center

Over the course of two days, space shuttle Atlantis flew from California to Florida, and you can read all about it on the shuttle ferry flight blog (where these lovely pictures came from!)

In-Flight Movie

Shuttle Atlantis en route to Kennedy Space Center

Small follow-up to Friday’s post, here is shuttle Atlantis being ferried back to Florida (image courtesy of NASA.) You can watch the takeoff and in-flight video here (quite cool.)

Mounted on a modified Boeing 747 shuttle carrier aircraft, Atlantis took off from Edwards Air Force Base, Calif. The trip, flown during daylight hours and in precipitation-free weather, will necessitate several stopovers for fueling and is expected to take at least two days to complete.

Shuttle in a Sling

Preparing for the Journey Home

Going out of town this weekend (writing this late Thursday evening) and I don’t have the energy for a full-on Friday Picspam this week… so here, have a shuttle in a sling. This is shuttle Atlantis at Dryden Flight Research Center, preparing to be ferried back to Florida on the back of a 747.
