Star Pendants

My star pendant by Uniko Jewelry

Star pendant I bought at Uniko Jewelry, Portland Saturday Market, June 2010

I’ve been wanting to make this post for about a month. I bought this beautiful fused glass star pendant at the Portland Saturday Market in Portland, Oregon. It’s a mind-bogglingly huge array of artisans and craftsmen, so much so that I was hard-pressed to pick something to spend my money on… until I saw Uniko Jewelry’s fused glass pendants. (I have a thing for glass.) The hearts were gorgeous, but naturally what caught my eye were the STARS, each one a bit different, all of them fantastic. Mine is teal (or purple, depending on angle/lighting) with a dash of red and black. I absolutely adore it. It’s nearly an inch wide, a bit more than a quarter-inch thick, and it comes with a very nice silver chain.

I asked the owner/artist Stephen Poon for permission to post some of his art here (and for larger pictures), which he kindly provided! There are several stars for sale on his website, and they’re all beautiful as far as I’m concerned. Please go buy one (or two or three!)

Celestial Glass

Celestial Series by Glass Eye Studio: Mercury Celestial Series by Glass Eye Studio: Milky Way

I was reminded of these fantastic glass sculptures last week by a commenter; I saw a display of Glass Eye Studio’s Celestial Series in a rock shop coming back from the Oregon coast after Christmas. I’m a sucker for glass anyway, but these are particularly spectacular — I especially like the Moon (naturally) and Mercury.

Moon Marbles

A friend directed me to the Moon Marble Company, where they create a terrific “Universe” set:

The Universe Mib Box holds 48 of the 5/8 inch diameter marbles. This box contains 12 styles of marbles from the Vacor Factory in Guadalahara, MX including; Stardust, Comet, Meteor, Asteroid, Milkyway, Galaxy, Jupiter, Neptune, Earth, Mars, Venus, and Sun.

Definitely worth a look-see!

Aluna

Aluna Clock at night, image by Mark Glean

An idea not yet realized, but one which looks spectacular — hey, if it’s a translucent glass sculpture, with the added benefit of being a moon clock, I’m all for Aluna. According to the BBC, London plans to build it by 2012, in time for their Olympic Games.

Laura Williams… explained that the clock would be powered by the tides from the Thames.

“There are three giant concentric rings made from recycled glass,” she told me. “Light shines through from the glass in time with the Moon’s cycles so the largest ring shows the lunar phase. Gradually the light waxes on all the way around the ring and connects full circle when it’s full Moon.

“The second ring is like the big hand of the clock. It’s a marker of light that tracks the Moon around the globe so that’s the lunar day cycle.

“The third ring – the smallest – is the small hand that tracks the tide as it goes from high tide to low.”

Universe Marbles

Nebula galaxy marble

I found Universe Marbles in an Astronomy Magazine ad, and can’t believe the amazing things Gateson Recko does with glass! From the artist:

The Universe encompasses everything that we know and much more that we are just beginning to learn. Since the age of consciousness, man has looked to the skies with wonderment. It has only been in the last few decades that true images of space have been gathered. The Hubble space telescope has brought us priceless information about what the universe looks like beyond our solar system, from the formation of fledgling galaxies to the final days of stars like our sun.

In my most recent body of work, Universe Marbles, I use the sphere to contain a small piece of distant universe. Each sphere is small enough to hold in your hand, yet has the feeling of a great expanse of space. My goal is to create realistic, three dimensional, panoramic views of space. Included in these scenes are nebula made from fine silver and 24k gold, galactic vortexes with opal moons, comets, exploding planets and an endless supply of planet variations.

Since 2001, I have worked almost exclusively on this body of work, honing my skills and developing a language that is a unique vision of our universe.
