Cosmic Flights
Posted by Danielle in Books & Literature on January 4, 2012
I just love these Soviet space illustrations from Flight into Cosmic Space, circa 1949 (and hey, they were posted on my birthday, so happy belated to me!) Above is a space station (or a cosmic-sized ring, your choice), and below is said station with a rocket launching away from it. Check out the post at Dreams of Space for more images!

Interplanetary Cruisin’
The Inter-Planet Cruiser… by Buick. If it comes down to the known vehicle companies making new space-faring vehicles, I think I’d still buy an import. [shrug] Maybe that’s just me.

And what a lovely view it is, so close to the Moon. How I wish I could vacation there….

Galactic Manoeuvre, by Nikolai Nedbailo
Two more Russian retro-future images, because I just can’t get enough of this stuff. Image quality isn’t the best on these, but they’re still beautiful to look at! Images courtesy of Dark Roasted Blend.

Star Jets

I love this illustration of my favorite part of Tomorrowland! A thoughtful souvenir, from someone who clearly knows my fairly obvious if you read this blog tastes.

Would NOT want to be the guy pulling the lever, seems like you might get a little toasty when it takes off….

Mars Mission
The retro-future is very dynamic, and this photo is no exception. Just look at all that bustling activity!

I can’t resist posting one more fantastic illustration by Virgil Finlay, from The Complete Book of Space Travel by Albro Gaul, published in 1956. (First post is here.)
This is admittedly my favorite of the bunch. There’s tons of beautiful detail in this dynamic illustration. The combination of lightning bolts and concentric (dizzying) circles overlaying the pilot’s face makes for a disturbing scene. We don’t know what’s going on, but clearly it’s dangerous. Not exactly happy-fun-time for Mr. Astronaut!
