Meaning no disrespect to the Laser Geodynamics Satellite I, but the name combined with the image just screamed for this title, so there you have it. Enjoy your Wednesday!

The LAGEOS I (Laser Geodynamics Satellite) was developed and launched by the Marshall Space Flight Center on May 4, 1976 from Vandenberg Air Force Base, California. The two-foot diameter satellite orbited the Earth from pole to pole and measured the movements of the Earth’s surface.

For every version of Animal Crossing I play, one of my main game goals is to complete the Space Theme set. (Shown is the set as it is for Animal Crossing: City Folk, the Wii version.) As you can see, it has all a girl (or boy!) needs to be space-TACULAR. Also, the Lunar Surface (the carpet, with matching Lunar Horizon wallpaper) makes a lovely moon-dust crunchy sound when you walk on it.

(One of our recently-new villagers, Carmen, arrived with most of the Space Theme in her house, and matching wall and floor. Although I ran to her house during the first convenient Flea Market, alas, already she’d gotten rid of the Rocket. I don’t know who has it, or what happened to it, but I sure do know that it is NOT IN MY HOUSE, AS IT IS SUPPOSED TO BE. She did sell me her Lunar Lander though, which is something.)

I was so in love with this little Sputnik wannabe. It was once the sign for Satellite Shopland in Anaheim, but didn’t enjoy a long life due to the Disney-fication of the area.

I went looking for Norwegian stamps because I was hoping for an aurora, and lookie, I found one! Released in 1991, these stamps feature satellite ERS-1 over Scandinavia, and a sounding rocket launch with aurora in the background.

These stamp hail from Wallis and Futuna Islands, issued in 1965 to commemorate the first French satellite.

What appeals to me about this set of stacking rings is their rugged finish — they remind me of fusion-crusty meteorites and worn, pitted (by cosmic rays and space dust?) metal. The rose gold adds a striking note of purity amongst all that patina.

One little moonrock with an orbiting 9 carat gold satellite, both on delicate bands. The silver is oxidised, then the surface of the moonrock is polished back to bright, leaving the craters contrasting. The bands are left black and buffed to shininess, like coal.

These stamp sets were released in 2007 by Guinea-Bissau, commemorating the 50th anniversary of Sputniks 1 and 2. Lovely artwork!

I found these plucky little stamps last week; they hail from Maldives, a plucky little island nation in the Indian Ocean. Space AND Disney characters? Now THAT is a combo!
