The Buzz

I didn’t realize that Buzz Lightyear had put time in on the ISS, but he came home a week ago, and is eagerly anticipating his ticker tape parade in October:
Also returning aboard space shuttle Discovery was Disney’s space ranger Buzz Lightyear, after spending 15 months aboard the International Space Station. His time on the orbiting laboratory will celebrated in a ticker-tape parade together with his space station crew mates and former Apollo 11 moonwalker Buzz Aldrin on Oct. 2 at Walt Disney World in Florida.
And hey, the guy’s been working hard while he was up there.
While on the space station, Buzz supported NASA’s education outreach program — Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, or STEM, by creating a series of fun educational online outreach programs. Following his return, Disney is partnering with NASA to create a new online educational game and an online mission patch competition for school kids across America.
The Nose Knows
I suppose this could be considered a “nostril” shot of shuttle Discovery… if it had nostrils, I mean. It will be ferried back to Florida tomorrow, after landing in California last Friday. Get a much larger version (mine is cropped square) here.

California Landing

Shuttle Discovery landed at Edwards Air Force Base in California on Friday, ending a successful mission to the International Space Station. (Edwards doesn’t take as many landing photos as KSC does, so here’s what I’ve got.)

128 Highlights

STS-128 (shuttle Discovery) will be landing later today; here’s a couple of photo highlights I liked from the orbital archives. Godspeed Discovery, and come home safe and sound.

What are the astronauts doing this shuttle trip? See for yourself, and get the large, detailed versions.
Magic

Pictures like this remind me how wondrous and magical spaceflight really is. Guaranteed to instill a sense of wonder; take three and call me in the morning.

Discovery Launches

Highlights from Friday’s night launch (11:57 pm EDT!)

Light Show

Last night’s launch of STS-128 (shuttle Discovery) was scrubbed due to lightning, as seen in the following pictures! Get the big versions here, they’re quite worth it.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. — Xenon lights illuminate the rain falling on NASA Kennedy Space Center’s Launch Pad 39A at 1:24 a.m. EDT as space shuttle Discovery waits for a scheduled liftoff on the STS-128 mission. Launch was scrubbed due to the weather conditions, including lightning, that violated the limitations for liftoff. Another launch attempt is scheduled for 1:10 a.m. Aug. 26. Discovery’s 13-day mission will deliver more than 7 tons of supplies, science racks and equipment, as well as additional environmental hardware to sustain six crew members on the International Space Station.

The above image is pretty far off (though gorgeous), so here’s a close-up, showing shuttle, pad, xenon lights and lightning:

Crawling

Space Shuttle Discovery crawled over to Pad 39A yesterday; STS-128 will launch later this month with yet more stuff for the ISS. Yay, launching and stuff.
No doubt, dear reader, you have noticed my fascination with SCALE when it comes to spaceflight. I simply adore showing great big spaceships with itty bitty people next to them. Like this:
